Healthy Smoothie Recipes

Smoothies are just incredible. They work for a morning energiser, a mid-morning snack, that afternoon pick me up, a pre or post workout indulge or a creamy evening dessert. Personally, smoothies are all about the morning. There's nothing quite like waking up when the sky is still asleep and collecting up some of your favourite fruits for that morning rush of icy, fruity goodness...or is that just me? I feel that having a smoothie every day helps me feel less hungry mid-morning, keeps me feeling awake and energised and best of all, gets at least 3 of your 5-a-day done in one sitting! I honestly cannot recommend them enough!

When it comes to recipes my smoothie routine tends to involve a dash around the fridge and freezer to discover which fruits I actually have available and then combining a handful each of these with some juice and I'm pretty much sorted. However, having made smoothies daily for a good 3 months now there are certain combinations that I have discovered that are worth sharing! For all of these recipes just combine ingredients in a blender and blend until your desired consistency!

THE GREEN GOODNESS SMOOTHIE

For anyone new to the smoothie scene the mention of a green smoothie may freak you out a little, but I can assure you that there are no funky ingredients in this one - its pure fruity goodness with that added handful of spinach (trust me you can't even taste it!). This one is perfect for a morning energiser as spinach restores energy, increases vitality and is a vital source of iron, which plays a central role in transporting oxygen around the body, as well as being an excellent source of vitamins K, A, C and B2.

What you need:
(yields one large smoothie)
A Handful of Frozen Mango Chunks
Two Bananas
One Peach Soy Yoghurt Pot
A Handful of Spinach
Rice Milk
(add until desired consistency reached)
Chia & Flax Seeds

BREAKFAST ON-THE-GO SMOOTHIE

This smoothie is a perfect breakfast to take with you to school or work as it is sweet and filling, meaning that you don't need to eat anything alongside it to last you until your next meal, not to mention the fact it takes under 2 minutes to make (extra 15 minutes in bed? yes please). The optional cacao powder in this recipe gives it that extra boost as cacao has appetite-suppressant qualities meaning you won't feel the need for that mid-morning snack, it also helps boost energy, lowers blood pressure and is known to increase the circulation and availability of serotonin in the brain, leading to improved moods (the ultimate Monday morning pick-me-up).

What you need:
(yields one large smoothie)
One Tbsp of 100% Natural Peanut Butter
Two Bananas
Handful of Frozen Blueberries
Rice Milk
Oats
Chia & Flax Seeds
(add until desired consistency reached)
Optional; One Tbsp Raw Cacao Powder
Handful of Spinach

BEAUTIFUL BERRY SMOOTHIE

This smoothie is the ultimate fruit smoothie. It's perfect for the morning as it will set you up for the day due to berries having a high water content meaning they will fill you up quickly. Blueberries in particular are known for having high levels of antioxidants and improve memory function making this smoothie excellent for a before school breakfast, whilst strawberries boost immunity and regulate blood pressure. Enjoy !!

A Handful of Frozen Blueberries
A Handful of Frozen Raspberries

This smoothie combines some of the best super foods to boost your immune system and destroy that winter cold, making it a perfect energising start to your day.
